Lifting Hands Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the quality of life of people living in high social risk communities, through volunteering, companies and individual support.

 

In our holistic approach, we teach weekly lessons of different topics, as well as workshops and extracurricular support, looking for sustainability and long-term impact.

The problem
for which we fight

The world is going through a critical moment. Costa Rica is one characterized by the greatest political, economic and social instability of all time. Women are still invisible, girls and boys are raped and young people are victims of the system.

AROUND THE WORLD

There are 172 million people unemployed around the world. 700 million people live on extreme or moderated poverty even having a job.(OIT, 2018)

 

20 million of youth in Latin America and the Caribbean do not study or work.  (Banco Mundial, 2016)


Every day, 67 teenagers between 10-19 years are murdered in Latin American streets. (UNICEF, 2018)

14 millions of boys, girls and teenagers are out of the educational system in Latin America.(UNICEF, 2018)

Worldwide, women won 33% less than men. Between 1995 and 2015, the women global participation rate in work decreased from 52,4% to 49,6%. (ONU Mujer)

In the world exists around 875 millions of illiterate people. Two-thirds are women. (UNICEF)

At least, one in three women has survived some form of gender-based violence, most often by someone of their own family. (John Hopkins Global Report, 1999)

IN COSTA RICA

From 2017 to 2018 the percentage of homes in poverty increased from 20% to 21.1% and from 5.7% to 6.3% in extreme poverty. The multidimensional poverty in urban areas got worse in 0.4%. (Estado de la Nación, 2018)

Of every 1000 kids who start primary school, only 388 of them graduate from high school.  (MEP, 2016)

 

172.136 youth in Costa Rica between 15-24 years neither study or work. The 74.9% of youth that do not study or work; neither had full high school.  (Encuesta Continua de Empleo, 2016)

The 68.5% of crime police updates are among young people between 15-29 years old.  (Ministerio de Seguridad, 2016)


Of 53.054 births, 7785 are result of an early pregnancy, where the mother went from 11-19 years old.  (MINSA, 2018)

In 2017, the 80% of the people que ask for protective measures were women. 34.8 of 10.000 women reported cases of intrafamilial violence.  (INAMU, 2017)

Our vision is to create Lifting Hands centers in different high social risk communities, with the help of volunteers and strategic alliances that provide tools to enhance the possibility of breaking poverty cycles and building a better society.
